What is a product definition?

Think of the product definition as a template to display your product characteristics and define parameters that are required to communicate with external systems.

The product definition includes the Product Display Name, Description, and selected Default, Custom, and Variant Attributes and Prices.

For example: you can use a product definition for apparel that requires attributes such as size, color, fabric, etc. Shoes would require different sizing, heel height or other attributes.

A product definition also lets you define what attributes are mandatory for a product.

Before you begin to define the characteristics of a product, you ned to define the components required to describe the product you want to create. For example: Lookups and Attributes.

The Product definition can only be created by a user with an Administrator Role.

A product definition includes the following components:

Default attributes
Custom attributes
Variant and key variant attributes
Prices

Default attributes are an integral part of Orckestra Commerce Cloud and cannot be deleted or modified in a product definition. They are built-in information required by the platform such as the product name, description and system attributes such as Creation date and by whom the product was created.

Default attributes also include unit attributes. Unit attributes are a set of three default attributes that describe how the product is sold. These attributes are:

Unit of Measure
Item Format
Selling Method.

Custom attributes are created and defined for your business model by an administrator. They define the characteristics of a product. A custom attribute does not define the uniqueness of a product because a custom attribute does not create a unique SKU. To create unique variations of a product, you will use Key Variant attributes.

Key Variant attributes: these attributes define the uniqueness of a product. When a product definition contains one or more key variant attributes, a SKU is created for each variation. You can define as many versions or combinations required.
Variant attributes: Variant attributes are considered as the Custom attributes of a Key Variant Attribute.
Prices: Products can be listed with or without prices.
